Emeralds

Picture
Emeralds are Beyrl crystals colored green by chromium.   Emeralds tend to havel lots of inclusions (small Impurities).  Cheaper emeralds with lots of inclusions tend to be brittle.  When I say cheaper I mean less than $5000.00.    Large clear deep-green emeralds can cost as much as $50,000.00     The fragility of some emeralds means I don't recommend them for rings, unless they are counter-sunk below the metal line.   Some new settings are especially designed to protect emeralds.  That being said, I still recommend avoiding emeralds in rings.   Emerald pendants are a good way to keep your stones from being bashed about!
You can clean emeralds with dish soap and water.   Avoid extreme heat and cold.

Emeralds over 3 Cts. rise quickly in price.    An ideal emerald is clear, deep green and fairly large.    There are emeralds that are very light in color and when they have a small amount of green color they are called green Beryls and get a lower price      You may know some of the other Beryls: Blue Beryl is called Aquamarine and pink and peach Beryls are called morganite.    The elusive red Beryl is rare and costly, but the green emerald is hard to beat for color and eye appeal, especially when it is natural.
